Engine Generations We Remap

The 320d badge covers three very different engines, and the right remap file depends on which one is under the bonnet. We work with all three:

  • E90 (2005–2011) — N47D20, 163 bhp / 340 Nm (or 177 bhp from 2007). EDC17 ECU. Read via OBD.
  • F30 (2011–2019) — N47D20 / B47D20, 184 bhp / 380 Nm (LCI facelift raised it to 190 bhp). EDC17 (N47) or MD1 (B47 LCI). OBD read on most, bench on the very latest B47 protected ECUs.
  • G20 (2019–present) — B47D20, 190 bhp / 400 Nm. MD1CP004 / MD1CS001 ECU. Bench or OBD depending on ECU variant.

Each generation responds differently. The N47 is very well-understood, with a huge global file library and proven safe gains. The B47 is more tightly mapped from the factory and benefits from a more carefully developed file with attention to DPF, AdBlue and EGR operation. We confirm the exact ECU type and software level before quoting, so the file is matched to your specific car — not pulled from a generic library.

What you'll notice

What a 320d Stage 1 Feels Like

Mid-Range Pull

The biggest single difference. Around 2,000–3,500 rpm — the part of the rev range you actually use day-to-day — the 320d pulls harder and earlier. Overtaking on the M27 or A3 stops being a downchange-and-pray manoeuvre.

Sharper Throttle

BMW's drive-by-wire throttle is conservative on the 320d. A remap trims the pedal map, removing the delay between pressing the throttle and the engine responding. The car feels more eager, more connected.

Fewer Gear Changes

On the auto (ZF 8HP) you'll find the box holds gears longer and drops down less often. On a manual, you'll reach for third less in town. The flatter torque curve makes the engine usable lower in the rev range.

Better MPG on Long Runs

On an economy-leaning map, motorway MPG typically improves 5–10%. You'll see it most on long, steady runs (M3 to London, M27 to Portsmouth) where the engine doesn't have to work as hard to maintain speed.

How We Remap a 320d

The job takes around 60–90 minutes on a 320d, start to finish, and is done at your home or workplace anywhere in Southampton, Hampshire or the surrounding area. Here's what happens:

  1. Pre-job diagnostic check. We read fault codes, check live data (boost pressure, DPF pressure, EGR position, injector corrections, maf readings) and confirm the engine is healthy enough to tune. If something's off — a tired injector, a sticky EGR, a clogged DPF — we'll flag it before writing any new software.
  2. Read the original ECU file. Via the OBD port (E90, most F30) or on-bench (very latest B47 protected ECUs on later G20s). The original file is saved — this is your safety net and your return-to-stock file.
  3. Write the Stage 1 file. Adjusted around your engine, your fuel and your goals (performance, economy, or a balance). We don't load generic maps — the file is calibrated to the platform and refined for the typical duty cycle of a 320d owner.
  4. Post-job checks. We re-read fault codes, re-check live data, log a short road-test pull to confirm the car is pulling cleanly across the rev range, and hand the original file back to you on a labelled USB stick.

Compatibility & Hardware

Stage 1 vs Stage 2, and What You Don't Need to Change

Standard Hardware

Stage 1 is software-only. No new intercooler, no decat, no intake, no downpipe. The OEM turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR and AdBlue all stay. The car looks completely standard, which matters for warranty, insurance and resale.

Auto & Manual

We tune both the 6-speed manual and the ZF 8HP automatic 320d. The auto's torque limiters are recalibrated to handle the increased torque without the box protecting itself. We log the gearbox adaptation data after the remap.

xDrive & Touring

The xDrive and Touring variants tune the same as the saloon. The added weight of the Touring (around 80 kg) and the additional driveline of xDrive are well within the safety margin of a Stage 1 file.

DPF & EGR

Stage 1 keeps the DPF and EGR fully operational. No warning lights, no limp mode. The DPF regeneration cycle continues to run normally. If your DPF is already partially blocked, we may recommend a diagnostic clean first.

AdBlue / SCR

AdBlue dosing and SCR system are preserved. If your 320d is throwing AdBlue-related fault codes, we can diagnose and address those separately, but they aren't removed by a Stage 1 remap.

Stage 2 (Heads-Up)

Stage 2 — typically +80–110 bhp — requires hardware: a high-flow downpipe, an uprated intercooler, an intake, and often a clutch on manuals. We develop Stage 2 files in-house and quote on application once hardware is fitted.

Under UK consumer law, a manufacturer cannot void your entire warranty just because the car has been remapped — they have to prove the remap caused a specific failure. We save your original ECU file, and if you ever need a return-to-stock for a warranty claim, the file is restored to factory condition in about 20 minutes. You must declare the remap to your insurer. Most UK insurers either accept it with no premium change (common with mainstream providers) or charge a small uplift. We've never seen a remap-only claim refused. If your insurer asks, the file is calibrated to OEM safety levels and is fully reversible — we can return the car to stock in about 20 minutes.
