ECU remapping is the process of adjusting the software inside your vehicle’s engine control unit (ECU) to change how the engine behaves. The most common goals are more power, more torque, sharper throttle response or improved fuel economy. In the UK, a remap is perfectly legal as long as the vehicle still meets the road-legal emissions standards it was built to meet.
How ECU remapping works
Your ECU uses calibrated software maps for fuel, boost, ignition timing, torque limiters and throttle response. A remap adjusts those maps to unlock more performance, smoother delivery or better efficiency, depending on your goals.
Types of ECU remap
- Stage 1 remap — software-only, no hardware changes. The most popular option.
- Stage 2 remap — works alongside hardware upgrades (downpipe, intercooler, intake).
- Economy remap — optimised for fuel economy, often paired with strong low-end torque.
Is ECU remapping legal in the UK?
Yes, provided the vehicle continues to meet the emissions standards it was originally type-approved to. We never recommend tuning that disables or defeats a vehicle’s emissions control system. Boostcore provides compliant Stage 1 and economy remaps that respect your vehicle’s emissions hardware.
Why diagnostics come first
A healthy baseline is essential. We always run a full system diagnostic before tuning to make sure your vehicle is a good candidate. This protects your engine and your investment.
