What Does AdBlue Do? The Plain-English Guide

If you drive a modern diesel car, you have an AdBlue tank and you’ve probably wondered what it actually does. This guide explains what AdBlue is, how the SCR system works, why modern diesels need it, and what happens if the AdBlue runs out.

What AdBlue is

AdBlue is a urea-based solution – 32.5% urea, 67.5% deionised water. It’s a clear, odourless, non-toxic liquid that looks like water. It’s stored in a separate tank in the car, usually near the fuel tank or under the boot floor, and is topped up through a small filler cap (often next to the diesel filler, sometimes colour-coded blue).

Despite the brand name “AdBlue” (which is a registered trademark of the German Association of the Automotive Industry), the product is a commodity. Any ISO 22241-spec urea solution is functionally identical. You can buy AdBlue at the supermarket, at motorway service stations, at Halfords, or in 10-litre bottles online. All of it is the same thing.

What AdBlue does

AdBlue is injected into the exhaust stream of modern diesel cars. In the exhaust, it breaks down into ammonia (NH3), which reacts with the harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) in a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst, turning them into harmless nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O).

The chemical reaction is roughly:

NOx + NH3 → N2 + H2O

Without AdBlue, the SCR catalyst can’t do its job, and NOx emissions from a modern diesel would be 5-10x higher. NOx is a major component of urban air pollution, linked to respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and premature death. The Euro 6 emissions standard (which all new diesels had to meet from September 2015) is significantly stricter on NOx than Euro 5, and AdBlue + SCR is the technology that allows diesels to meet it.

How the SCR system works

The AdBlue system has four main components:

  1. AdBlue tank – typically 10-20 litres, with a level sensor and a temperature sensor (AdBlue freezes at -11°C, so the tank is usually heated)
  2. AdBlue pump and module – pressurises the AdBlue and delivers it to the injector
  3. AdBlue injector – a small, precision injector that squirts a controlled amount of AdBlue into the exhaust stream upstream of the SCR catalyst
  4. SCR catalyst – a ceramic honeycomb coated with a platinum-group metal catalyst. The ammonia in the AdBlue reacts with the NOx in the exhaust to produce nitrogen and water.

Two NOx sensors (one upstream of the SCR, one downstream) measure the NOx levels before and after the catalyst. The ECU uses these readings to control the AdBlue injection rate. If the downstream NOx is too high, the ECU increases the AdBlue dose. If it’s too low (meaning over-dosing), the ECU reduces it.

Why modern diesels need AdBlue

Euro 6 (the emissions standard for new cars sold in the EU/UK from September 2015) cut the NOx limit for diesel cars by 56% compared to Euro 5. The only technology that lets diesels meet this limit is the SCR system with AdBlue injection. Other approaches – exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), lean NOx trap (LNT) – can reduce NOx, but not by enough to meet Euro 6 on their own.

So if you drive a diesel car registered after September 2015, it almost certainly has an AdBlue system. If the AdBlue system isn’t working, the car will go into limp mode, display a “no restart in X miles” countdown, and eventually prevent the engine from restarting.

How often you need to refill AdBlue

Typical AdBlue consumption is 1-2 litres per 1,000 miles, depending on driving style and the SCR system. Most AdBlue tanks hold 10-20 litres, so a refill every 5,000-10,000 miles is normal. Some drivers never have to refill – particularly if they do mostly motorway miles, where AdBlue consumption is lower.

Most cars warn you well before the AdBlue runs out. The dashboard typically shows a “X miles of AdBlue remaining” message, often with a recommended refill volume. A 10-litre refill usually costs £15-£25 and takes 5 minutes.

What happens if the AdBlue runs out

If the AdBlue runs out (or the SCR system has a fault), the car will go into a countdown mode. The ECU gives you a certain number of miles (usually 500-1,500) before it prevents the engine from restarting, as a way of forcing you to address the issue. This is a legal requirement under Euro 6 – if the SCR system isn’t working, the car must not be allowed to keep being driven indefinitely.

The countdown resets as soon as the SCR system is back online. Refilling AdBlue, fixing a sensor, replacing a faulty injector or pump – any of these will reset the countdown. But if you ignore the countdown and let it reach zero, the engine won’t restart on the next key cycle, and you’ll need recovery.

Common AdBlue system faults

  • AdBlue tank genuinely empty – the most common cause. Refill, £15-£25, takes 5 minutes.
  • AdBlue injector faulty – the small injector that squirts AdBlue into the exhaust can clog or fail. Replacement is usually £200-£400 fitted.
  • AdBlue pump faulty – the pump that pressurises the AdBlue can fail. Replacement is usually £400-£800 fitted.
  • NOx sensor faulty – the upstream or downstream NOx sensor can fail and throw a false SCR fault. Replacement is usually £150-£300 per sensor.
  • SCR catalyst failed – the catalyst itself can fail (cracking, contamination, end-of-life). Replacement is usually £800-£2,000 fitted.
  • Wiring or connector fault – less common but possible. A corroded connector or damaged wiring can throw SCR faults.

Is AdBlue the same as urea?

AdBlue is 32.5% urea and 67.5% deionised water. The urea in AdBlue is a high-purity, synthetic urea (not agricultural urea, which contains impurities). Don’t try to use agricultural urea or any non-ISO 22241-spec fluid – it will damage the SCR system.

Can I buy cheap AdBlue from the supermarket?

Yes, as long as it’s ISO 22241-spec. Most supermarket and motorway-fuel-station AdBlue is spec-compliant. Avoid no-name brands, diluted product, or non-urea alternatives – they will damage the SCR system.

Does AdBlue go off?

AdBlue has a shelf life of about 12-18 months if stored in cool, dry conditions. In the car’s tank, it lasts longer (the tank is sealed and temperature-controlled). If you buy AdBlue in bulk, store it in a cool place and use it within 12 months.

Will a Stage 1 remap affect AdBlue consumption?

No. A properly written Stage 1 remap keeps the AdBlue and SCR system fully operational. The file is calibrated so the engine produces no more NOx than the standard map, and the AdBlue dosing remains the same.
