How to Regenerate a DPF Filter: The Honest Guide

DPF regeneration sounds technical, but the concept is simple: a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) traps soot, and every so often the exhaust has to get hot enough to burn that soot off. The process of burning it off is called “regeneration” or “regen”. This guide explains the three types of regen, when each one happens, what can go wrong, and what to do if a regen doesn’t complete.

What a DPF regen is

A DPF regen is the process of burning off the accumulated soot inside the filter. The soot is the visible black smoke you’d otherwise see from a diesel, plus invisible fine particulates (PM2.5 and smaller) that are linked to respiratory disease. The DPF traps these in its ceramic honeycomb walls, and the regen cycle oxidises them into a fine ash that stays in the wall.

The regen cycle is controlled by the ECU, which monitors soot loading via pressure sensors and temperature sensors mounted on the filter. When soot loading reaches a threshold, the ECU triggers a regen. The threshold varies by manufacturer and by ECU calibration, but it’s typically every 200-500 miles for a healthy filter.

The 3 types of DPF regen

1. Passive regen

A passive regen happens automatically when the exhaust temperature gets high enough during normal driving. The threshold is typically 350-400°C for 10-15 minutes. This is easy to achieve on a motorway run, harder on town driving, and almost impossible on short urban journeys.

Passive regens are silent and invisible – you won’t notice them happening. The soot burns off gradually, the soot mass drops back below the threshold, and the cycle starts again.

2. Active regen

An active regen is triggered by the ECU when the soot mass hasn’t dropped below the threshold after a passive regen would normally have done it. The ECU takes active steps to raise the exhaust temperature: it adjusts the injection timing, adds post-injections to dump unburnt fuel into the exhaust, and runs the engine at a slightly higher RPM for 10-20 minutes.

You may notice a slight increase in fuel consumption, a barely-detectable change in exhaust note, and (on automatic cars) the gearbox holding a lower gear for longer. An active regen is normal – it’s the ECU catching up on soot that the passive regens haven’t been able to clear.

3. Forced regen

A forced regen is what a diagnostic tool triggers when soot loading is above the safe threshold and the standard active regen hasn’t been able to clear it. A forced regen holds the exhaust at 500-600°C for 20-30 minutes, burning off a much larger amount of soot than a normal active regen.

How to encourage a regen on a short-journey car

If your car is used mostly for short journeys and the DPF light has come on, the most common cause is that the engine never gets hot enough for a regen. The fix is a longer drive:

  1. Get on a motorway or A-road and drive at 50-70 mph for 30-40 minutes without stopping. The engine needs to be at normal operating temperature, and the exhaust needs to stay hot for the duration.
  2. Don’t use the air conditioning heavily during this drive – it puts load on the engine and reduces the exhaust temperature.
  3. Don’t turn the engine off during the drive – the regen needs continuous running to complete.
  4. If the DPF light goes out during or shortly after the drive, a regen has completed successfully.
  5. If the light stays on, the filter is either too full for a passive/active regen, or there’s a sensor fault preventing the regen from running. Book a diagnostic.

What can prevent a regen from completing

Common reasons a regen doesn’t complete:

  • Short journeys – the engine cools down before the regen can finish
  • Faulty DPF pressure sensor – the ECU can’t measure soot loading accurately and may not trigger the regen
  • Faulty DPF temperature sensor – the ECU can’t measure exhaust temperature and won’t risk a regen
  • Faulty EGR – extra soot loading the filter can’t handle
  • Low oil level or wrong oil spec – some oils raise ash levels, accelerating blockage
  • Faulty turbo – pushing oil into the intake, causing excess soot

What a forced regen costs and what it can fix

A mobile forced regen typically costs £100-200 and takes 30-60 minutes. It works for filters that are still regenerable (the substrate is intact, the ash loading is below the limit, the sensors are working). It does NOT work for:

  • Filters with internal melt damage (substrate cracked or melted)
  • Filters that are at end-of-life ash loading (typically 150,000+ miles)
  • Filters where the underlying cause (faulty sensor, faulty EGR, low oil) hasn’t been fixed

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a forced regen myself?

No – it requires a dealer-level diagnostic tool and the right software. DIY forced regens can damage the filter if the soot loading is too high or if a sensor is faulty. The ECU itself triggers normal active regens; a forced regen is a deliberate intervention by a diagnostic tool.

How often should a DPF regen?

Every 200-500 miles on a healthy filter. Cars used mostly for motorway driving will do passive regens every 50-100 miles. Cars used mostly for short journeys will do active regens every 300-500 miles, and may go into forced regen territory if the pattern continues.

Will a Stage 1 remap affect DPF regen?

No. A properly written Stage 1 remap keeps the DPF, EGR and AdBlue fully operational. The file is calibrated so the engine produces no more soot than the standard map.
