How to Clean a DPF Filter (And When You Shouldn’t)

“How do I clean my DPF filter?” is one of the most-Googled diesel questions in the UK. The honest answer is that most DPF cleaning methods don’t work, and the few that do only work in specific circumstances. This guide covers the three methods that actually work, the four that don’t, and how to tell which your car needs.

The three methods that actually work

1. A forced regen (if the filter is still regenerable)

A forced regen is the cheapest and most effective DPF “clean” if the filter is still regenerable. The ECU is triggered to run an extended regeneration cycle, holding the exhaust at 500-600°C for 20-30 minutes. This burns off accumulated soot and restores the filter to near-original condition.

A forced regen works on filters that are above the normal soot-loading threshold but still intact. It does NOT work on filters with internal damage, on filters that are at end-of-life ash loading, or on filters with a faulty pressure or temperature sensor.

Cost: typically £100-200 as part of a mobile diagnostic. Time: 30-60 minutes.

2. A water-flush clean (workshop job)

A water-flush clean removes the filter from the car, reverse-flushes it with high-pressure water and a chemical cleaning agent, dries it, refits it, and resets the ECU. The wash removes loose ash and soot that a regen can’t reach.

A water-flush clean works on filters with normal ash loading but accumulated debris – typically filters that have been partially blocked for a long time. It does NOT work on filters with internal melt damage, on filters that are at end-of-life ash loading, or on filters with a cracked substrate.

Cost: typically £200-400 plus refitting. Time: half a day to a day.

3. A thermal clean (specialist workshop job)

A thermal clean is the most thorough DPF cleaning method. The filter is removed, baked in a specialist furnace at 600-800°C for several hours, and reinstalled. The high temperature burns off the non-combustible ash that accumulates over the life of the filter.

A thermal clean is the only method that actually addresses ash loading. It’s done by specialist DPF-cleaning companies (not main dealers, not fast-fits) and is typically cheaper than a replacement DPF for a filter that’s still in good condition but ash-loaded.

Cost: typically £250-450 including refitting. Time: 1-2 days (off-car at the specialist).

The four methods that don’t work (or are illegal)

1. Supermarket “DPF cleaner” fuel additives

Fuel-additive DPF cleaners (the ones you pour into the tank for £10-£20) don’t work. The additive concentration is too low to make a meaningful difference to soot loading, and the additive often doesn’t even reach the filter. The few additives that have a measurable effect need a specific driving cycle after dosing, and the car needs to be in a state where a regen is possible.

If your filter is genuinely blocked, a fuel additive will not fix it. Save your money for a proper diagnostic.

2. Disconnecting the battery to clear the warning

Clearing the DPF fault code (by disconnecting the battery or using a £20 OBD tool) doesn’t clean the filter. The soot is still there, and the ECU will re-detect the high soot loading within 50-200 miles. Clearing the code without fixing the cause is worse than not clearing it, because you’ve lost the diagnostic information the ECU was storing.

3. A long motorway run as a “fix”

A long motorway run can trigger a passive or active regen, which can clear a mildly-loaded filter. But it’s not a fix for a filter that’s critically loaded, a filter with internal damage, or a filter with a faulty sensor. If the regen doesn’t complete, you’ve made things worse – the filter is still loaded, and the ECU has wasted a regen attempt.

4. DPF delete

Removing the DPF entirely is illegal on UK public roads. It makes the car non-roadworthy, it will fail the MOT, and it’s a criminal offence. Boostcore does not offer DPF delete services. The proper fix is a diagnostic, a clean, or a replacement.

How to tell which method your car needs

A proper DPF diagnostic is the only reliable way to know. The diagnostic reads the fault codes, reviews the live data (DPF pressure differential, soot mass, ash mass, regen status, last regen completion distance), and gives you an honest assessment:

  • Filter regenerable, soot mass high – forced regen, £100-200
  • Filter regenerable, soot and ash mass high – thermal clean, £250-450, off-car at a specialist
  • Filter damaged, substrate cracked or melted – replacement, £600-1,500 fitted
  • Sensor fault, filter still healthy – sensor replacement, £150-300

When a DPF clean is the wrong answer

Don’t clean the DPF if:

  • The substrate is physically damaged (cracked, melted, broken)
  • The filter is at end-of-life ash loading and the underlying cause (short journeys, faulty EGR) hasn’t been addressed
  • There’s a sensor fault that needs fixing first
  • The car is at very high mileage (150,000+ miles) and the filter has been partially blocked for a long time

In all of these cases, a clean will not restore the filter to working condition. Replacement is the right answer.
