How it works on the day

A typical mobile ECU remap runs like this:

  1. Arrival and setup. The technician arrives at the agreed time, parks near the vehicle, and sets up the equipment. This takes 5–10 minutes.
  2. Pre-flash diagnostic. The diagnostic tool is plugged into the OBD port (usually driver’s footwell, lower dashboard). Every relevant system is scanned: engine, transmission, ABS, airbag, emissions, body control. Stored codes are pulled. Live data is reviewed: fuel trim, boost pressure, sensor readings, misfire counters, battery voltage.
  3. ECU read and original file backup. The current ECU file is read and saved. This is your fallback — if the remap ever needs to be reversed, this is the file that goes back on.
  4. Custom map write. The custom-written remap (a Stage 1, Stage 2, or economy tune, depending on what was agreed) is written to the ECU. The process takes 10–30 minutes depending on the vehicle. Battery support is connected throughout to protect the ECU from voltage-drop related corruption.
  5. Post-flash verification. The diagnostic tool is plugged back in. The new file is verified. Live data is reviewed to confirm the engine is operating as expected. Stored codes are checked again.
  6. Test drive (optional but recommended). For a Stage 1 or Stage 2 tune, a short test drive is the best way to confirm the vehicle is delivering the expected power and torque. We can do this on your local roads or a nearby dual carriageway.
  7. Handover. The keys are returned, the work is explained, the original file is confirmed as backed up, and the written terms agreement is signed.

Door-to-door, this is 1.5 to 2 hours for a typical Stage 1 remap on a turbocharged car or van. A pre-flash diagnostic with no remap (just the health check) is 30–60 minutes.

What you need to provide

Three things:

  1. A safe working spot. A driveway, a work car park, or an arranged location. Flat, level ground, off the public highway, with sensible access to the vehicle.
  2. A mains socket within reach. A standard UK 230V socket for the battery support unit. We carry extension leads as standard, but the closer the better.
  3. The vehicle’s keys and any relevant paperwork. Service history is useful if you have it. Any previous remap paperwork, if applicable, helps us understand what’s already on the ECU.

What if it rains?

Mobile ECU remapping goes ahead in normal rain. The OBD port is inside the vehicle, the equipment is designed to be used in normal conditions, and the work itself doesn’t depend on the weather. The two situations we won’t work in are heavy standing water (a flood risk) and an electrical storm (lightning and ECU programming are not a good mix). Both are rare in the UK.

How a proper mobile setup is the same as a workshop

The honest answer is that a proper mobile remap is the same job as a workshop remap, just done in a different location.
