  • Power: +20-40% on top of the standard figure. A 150 hp 2.0 TDI becomes 185-200 hp. A 190 hp 320d becomes 230-250 hp.
  • Torque: +20-35% on top of the standard figure. A 320 Nm engine becomes 400-440 Nm. The torque curve is also flattened, so the peak is available over a wider RPM range.

  • Lower fueling at light throttle (less engine braking, smoother cruising)

  • Smoother throttle map (less wasted fuel on tiny pedal movements)

The honest caveats

  • A remap doesn’t fix a worn engine. A 180,000-mile 320d with worn injectors and a tired turbo will gain less and stress more than a 60,000-mile example. A pre-flash diagnostic tells you what’s safe.
  • The cheap remaps aren’t the same product. A £150 flash from a generic file is not the same as a £350 custom file from a vehicle-specific calibration. The hardware can be identical; the result is not.
  • Fuel quality matters. A remap on supermarket diesel is fine. A remap on poor-quality or bio-diesel blends can produce more soot and stress the DPF. Use decent fuel.
  • Insurance must be declared. Most UK insurers charge a small premium uplift (£20-50/year) for a declared remap. A few refuse to cover. Always declare.

When a diesel remap is the right call

A diesel remap makes sense when:

  • The car is turbocharged (almost all modern diesels are)
  • The engine is healthy (pre-flash diagnostic confirms this)

  • The engine is showing signs of wear (low boost, oil consumption, EGR or turbo faults) – the underlying issue should be fixed first
  • The car is still under manufacturer warranty and you don’t want to declare the remap
