“Can a dealer detect my remap?” is one of the most-Googled questions after a remap is booked. The honest answer is: yes, in most cases, but it’s less of a problem than it sounds. This guide explains what a dealer can actually see, what they can’t, and how to return the car to standard if you need to.
The short answer
Yes, a dealer can usually detect a remap. The dealer’s diagnostic tool reads the ECU software version, the calibration checksum, and the operating parameters – all of which can show signs of a modified file. A high-quality file written to closely match the original software structure is harder to detect, but most modern dealer tools will still spot the difference.
Detection isn’t necessarily a problem. A compliant Stage 1 remap is well within the engine’s design tolerance, and most dealers won’t refuse warranty work for a software modification. But if you need the car to look standard (for a warranty visit, a sale, or a lease return), the file can be restored to the original in about 20 minutes.
What a dealer can see
When a dealer connects their diagnostic tool to the car, they can read:
- ECU software version – the part number and software level of the calibration. The dealer compares this to the manufacturer’s database. A modified file usually has a different checksum or version string than the standard file.
- Calibration data – the actual map values (fuel, boost, timing, torque limiters). The dealer can compare these to the standard values. A modified file typically has higher boost targets, more aggressive timing, or different torque limiters.
- Operating history – the ECU stores data on recent operating conditions, including peak boost, peak RPM, knock events, and regen cycles. A modified file may show higher peak boost, more knock events, or a different regen pattern.
- Fault codes – if the remap has caused any issues, the fault code history will show them.
What a dealer typically can’t see:
- The original file (the one we saved before the remap) – that’s on your USB stick
- Who did the remap – the ECU doesn’t store tuner identification
- Why the remap was done – the ECU doesn’t store intent
How detection works in practice
The detection process typically goes:
- Dealer connects diagnostic tool to the car
- Tool reads the ECU software version and calibration checksum
- Tool compares to the manufacturer’s database for that specific model/year/ECU
- If the checksum or version doesn’t match, the tool flags a “non-standard calibration”
- Dealer may or may not investigate further, depending on what the car is in for
For a routine service (oil change, brake pads, MOT), the dealer usually doesn’t check the ECU software. They’re focused on the mechanicals, and the calibration is irrelevant to the work being done.
For a warranty claim (engine failure, gearbox issue, electrical fault), the dealer will check the ECU software and may flag the modification. The manufacturer then has to decide whether to refuse cover, as discussed in our warranty guide.
How to return the car to standard
If you need the car to look completely standard – for a warranty visit, a sale, a lease return, or any other reason – the original file is restored in about 20 minutes:
- Book a return-to-stock visit (we come to you)
- We connect our diagnostic tool and write the original file back to the ECU
- The ECU verifies the file and either accepts or rejects it
- A successful write takes 5-15 minutes
- Road test to confirm everything is working
After the return-to-stock, the ECU is identical to the factory state. The software version, the calibration checksum, the operating history – all match the manufacturer’s database. There’s no way for a dealer to tell the car has ever been remapped.
Why return to standard is straightforward
The reason return-to-stock works so cleanly is that the original file is a complete image of the ECU calibration – the same as what was in the car when it left the factory. Writing it back puts the ECU in exactly the same state as before the remap.
The operating history (peak boost, knock events, etc.) is also reset when the original file is written. The ECU’s adaptive learning resets to factory defaults. The car is indistinguishable from a standard car of the same model, year, and mileage.
When you might need to return the car to standard
- Warranty work – if the car is going in for a warranty claim, return-to-stock first to avoid any potential dispute with the manufacturer
- Sale – if you’re selling the car, a standard ECU is a clean start for the new owner. Some buyers are wary of modified cars; a standard ECU removes the question.
- Lease return – most lease companies require the car to be returned in standard condition. Return-to-stock before the lease inspection.
- Personal preference – if you’ve changed your mind about the remap, return-to-stock is fast and clean.

Can the dealer tell who did the remap?
