DPF Replacement Cost: When Repair Is the Wrong Answer

There comes a point in every blocked DPF’s life where cleaning isn’t enough. The filter is cracked, the substrate has collapsed, or the ash loading has reached the point where no amount of machine cleaning will restore flow. At that point, the conversation shifts from cleaning to replacement – and the prices can be eye-watering. This guide covers how to tell when a DPF needs replacing rather than cleaning, what a new DPF actually costs in the UK, and how to avoid paying for one you don’t need.

When DPF replacement is the only answer

A DPF needs replacing, not cleaning, when:

  • The substrate is physically damaged. The ceramic honeycomb inside the filter has cracked, melted or collapsed. A specialist can confirm this with a borescope inspection – they look inside the filter and check for visible damage.
  • The filter is ash-loaded. Ash is the metallic residue from engine oil and fuel additives. Unlike soot, it can’t be removed by cleaning. Over a DPF’s life, the ash builds up until the filter can’t regenerate. At that point replacement is the only answer.
  • The filter has been heavily neglected. A DPF that’s been driven for thousands of miles with the warning light on, in limp mode, often can’t be saved. The damage from sustained over-loading is usually irreversible.
  • The DPF has been removed and replaced with a blanking plate. If a previous owner has had the DPF physically removed, the only legal way back on the road is to fit a new OEM unit.

What a new DPF costs in the UK in 2026

For a modern Euro 5 or Euro 6 diesel, the realistic price range for a new OEM DPF (filter unit only, not fitted) is:

  • Common cars (Golf, Focus, Astra, 320d, A4): £400-700 for the part, plus £200-400 fitting, plus £100-200 for the diagnostic and forced regen after. Total: £700-1,300 fitted.
  • Vans (Transit Custom, Vivaro, Transporter, Sprinter): £500-900 for the part, plus £250-400 fitting. Total: £800-1,400 fitted.
  • Premium (BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class, Audi A6): £800-1,500 for the part, plus £300-500 fitting. Total: £1,200-2,000+ fitted.
  • Aftermarket (non-OEM) DPF is usually 30-50% cheaper than OEM, but the warranty and longevity are typically worse. We recommend OEM for the main filter on any car you plan to keep more than 12 months.

These prices assume the new DPF can be coded to the ECU and the engine is healthy. If the ECU needs re-coding, the labour goes up. If the engine has an underlying fault that destroyed the old DPF, the new DPF will be destroyed too unless the engine is fixed at the same time.

The case for repair instead of replacement

Repair is the right call when:

  • The filter is intact and the blockage is soot (not ash)
  • The DPF has been blocked for a relatively short time (not months of neglect)
  • The engine is otherwise healthy
  • The car is worth less than the cost of a new DPF (e.g. a 12-year-old Transit with a £1,200 quote – cleaning is the only economic option)

A specialist machine clean on a healthy filter typically costs £250-450 and restores flow to near-new. On a car with a serviceable engine and a clean that addresses the cause at the same time, repair is almost always the better answer than replacement.

The hidden cost of just swapping the DPF

If a garage quotes a new DPF without diagnosing the cause of the failure, the new DPF is at risk. Common reasons DPF units fail:

  • Short-trip usage. The car never gets hot enough to complete a regen. Fix: longer regular journeys, or a software update that allows passive regen at lower temperatures.
  • Failed EGR. Excess soot being pumped into the DPF. Fix: clean or replace the EGR at the same time.
  • Oil consumption. Worn engines burn oil, and the oil ends up in the DPF as ash. Fix: address the engine wear, or budget for more frequent DPF replacement.
  • Faulty turbo. Excessive boost raises exhaust temperatures and stresses the DPF. Fix: replace or repair the turbo.

Fit a new DPF without addressing the cause and the new filter often fails within 12-24 months. The total cost over five years can be three times the cost of a proper “diagnose, fix cause, clean or replace DPF” job.

How Boostcore handles DPF replacement

Boostcore provides a full mobile diagnostic across Southampton, Hampshire, Portsmouth, Winchester, Eastleigh, Fareham and the surrounding area. If a new DPF is genuinely the only answer, we’ll quote the OEM part fitted and the software coding, and we’ll flag the underlying cause so you can make an informed decision. We never recommend removing or blanking the DPF for road use. Use the contact form to send your registration and the symptoms, or use the vehicle gains lookup to see what a Stage 1 remap on the same car would look like.

Frequently asked questions

Can a new DPF be fitted to any car?

In principle, yes – but the new filter has to be coded to the car’s ECU so the ECU knows it’s been replaced. On some cars this is a simple plug-in operation; on others it requires dealer-level diagnostic equipment. Always use a fitter who can do the coding as part of the job.

Is an aftermarket DPF any good?

Good aftermarket DPFs from reputable brands (BM Catalysts, Walker, Klarius) can be fine for older cars where the OEM price is uneconomic. For a car you plan to keep 3+ years, we’d recommend OEM – the aftermarkets are usually warrantied for 12-24 months and the failure rate is higher.

What if the DPF warning is on but the car drives fine?

Don’t ignore it. The warning is the car’s way of telling you the DPF is partly blocked and needs a regen or a clean. Drive a long enough journey at the right speed to trigger a passive regen, or book a diagnostic. The cost of sorting it now is much less than the cost of a new DPF if it fails completely.

Book a DPF diagnostic

If you’ve been quoted for a new DPF and want a second opinion, or if your DPF light is on and you don’t know where to start, send us a message with your registration and the symptoms. We’ll confirm a price for a diagnostic, then talk you through what we found and what the realistic options are. Use the contact form to get started, or the vehicle gains lookup for a Stage 1 remap on the same car. We cover Southampton, Hampshire and the surrounding area.
