The DPF pressure sensor is one of the smallest but most important sensors on a modern diesel, and one of the most common failure points. When the DPF pressure sensor fails, the car usually goes into limp mode, the DPF light comes on, and the car feels like it’s lost significant power. This guide covers what the DPF pressure sensor does, the symptoms of a failing sensor, what it costs to replace, and the common mistakes people make when trying to diagnose it.
What does the DPF pressure sensor do?
The DPF pressure sensor (sometimes called the DPF differential pressure sensor) measures the pressure difference between the exhaust gas going into the DPF and the exhaust gas coming out. As the DPF fills with soot, the difference in pressure grows – the exhaust has to push harder to get through the partly-blocked filter. The ECU uses this pressure difference to calculate how full the DPF is, and to decide when to trigger a regeneration.
On most modern diesels there are two pressure sensors – one upstream of the DPF (before the filter) and one downstream (after the filter). The ECU compares the two to get the differential. On some cars, the differential is measured by a single sensor that measures the pressure drop across the DPF directly.
What happens when the pressure sensor fails
A failed or failing DPF pressure sensor produces a very specific set of symptoms:
- DPF light on – the ECU can’t reliably measure the soot load, so it assumes the worst and lights the warning
- Limp mode – to protect the engine and the DPF, the ECU limits power and revs
- Engine management light – usually with code P2452 (DPF pressure sensor circuit low) or P2453 (DPF pressure sensor circuit high), or P0475 / P0476 / P0477 on some manufacturers
- Failed forced regen – the diagnostic tool tries to trigger a regen, but the sensor is giving a faulty reading, so the regen is aborted for safety
- Reduced MPG – the ECU may default to a richer fueling strategy when the sensor is unreliable
Common symptoms of a failing DPF pressure sensor
Three patterns to watch for:
- DPF light on, but the DPF is actually fine. A common scenario: the DPF pressure sensor is giving a false high reading, the ECU thinks the DPF is blocked, and lights the warning. The DPF may have a normal soot load, but the sensor is faulty. A proper diagnostic confirms this by reading the live data – the actual pressure differential is normal, but the sensor is reporting otherwise.
- DPF light on, car in limp mode, but a forced regen “fixes” it. The sensor is intermittent – sometimes giving a false reading, sometimes correct. A forced regen can reset the ECU’s soot load calculation, but the underlying sensor fault is still there. The light usually comes back within days or weeks.
- DPF warning on, the DPF is genuinely blocked, AND the sensor is faulty. The worst-case scenario: the DPF actually is blocked, and the sensor is also faulty, so the ECU doesn’t know how blocked the DPF is. The diagnostic has to assess both – replace the sensor, then properly diagnose the DPF condition.
How much does a DPF pressure sensor cost?
For a typical modern diesel (BMW, Mercedes, VAG, Ford), the realistic cost in the UK is:
- The part: £60-200 for an OEM or OEM-equivalent sensor. Some sensors are simple and cheap; others are integrated into a hose assembly that costs more.
- Fitting: usually 30-60 minutes, £50-100 labour depending on the car and the garage.
- Diagnostic and post-replacement check: £50-100 for the diagnostic, the sensor replacement coding (some cars need the new sensor coded to the ECU), and the post-replacement road test.
- Total: £150-400 for a typical DPF pressure sensor replacement, including the diagnostic.
Aftermarket sensors are usually 30-50% cheaper than OEM but the quality is variable. For a sensor that’s critical to the DPF management system, OEM or a known-good brand (Bosch, Denso, Hella) is the right call.
Common mistakes when diagnosing DPF pressure sensor faults
Three mistakes to avoid:
- Replacing the DPF instead of the sensor. A garage that doesn’t read the live data correctly may assume the DPF is blocked and quote a new DPF. The actual fault is a £100 sensor. Always ask the garage to show you the live pressure differential data before any work is done.
- Cleaning the DPF without checking the sensor. A forced regen or a machine clean won’t fix a faulty sensor. The DPF may genuinely be blocked (in which case the sensor is correct), or the sensor may be faulty and the DPF is fine. The right order is: diagnose first, then decide.
- Clearing the codes and hoping for the best. Some garages offer a “DPF delete” or “code clear” service that turns off the warning. This doesn’t fix the fault – the sensor is still giving a bad reading, and the ECU’s DPF management is still compromised. The light will come back, and the car may fail an MOT on the diagnostic trouble codes.
How to tell if the sensor or the DPF is the problem
The honest answer is: a proper diagnostic. A good diagnostic reads:
- The DPF pressure differential at idle, at 2000 RPM, and under load
- The DPF temperature
- The DPF soot load reading (in % or grams, depending on the ECU)
- The fault code history (whether the codes are current or historic)
- The live data for the EGR, the boost pressure, and the inlet manifold pressure (to rule out other causes of the DPF symptoms)
If the pressure differential is high (typically >10 mbar at idle, >50 mbar under load), the DPF is genuinely blocked. If the pressure differential is normal but the ECU is logging a DPF fault, the sensor is the likely culprit. A good garage will tell you which it is, with the data to back it up.

Will the car drive with a faulty DPF pressure sensor?
It will usually drive in limp mode – reduced power, lower rev limit, the DPF light on. You can usually drive to a garage, but the car is operating with compromised DPF management, which can damage the DPF if left for too long. Get it diagnosed promptly.
Does the new sensor need coding to the ECU?
