One of the most common questions we get asked is: how much power can a Stage 1 remap add? The honest answer is that it depends on the engine — but there are some clear patterns.
Typical Stage 1 power gains
For modern turbocharged petrol engines, Stage 1 gains are typically in the 15-30% range. For modern turbocharged diesel engines, gains are often in the 20-40% range, particularly in torque. That’s because diesels respond especially well to optimised fuel and boost maps, and the existing engine hardware is usually well over-engineered for the stock map.
Factors that affect gains
- Engine type — turbo diesels often see the largest absolute gains.
- Engine size and cylinder count — bigger engines usually see more bhp added.
- Turbocharger capacity — a bigger turbo can accept more boost.
- Fuel quality — premium fuel is recommended after a performance remap.
- Vehicle condition — worn sensors, clogged intake or weak ignition reduce the safe ceiling.
- Software availability — not every model has a high-quality map from day one.
