Stage 1 vs Stage 2 Remap: Which Is Right for Your Car?

If you’ve been looking into ECU remapping, you’ll have come across the terms Stage 1 and Stage 2. They sound technical, but the difference is actually quite simple.

Stage 1 remap

A Stage 1 remap is a software-only tune. It works within the tolerances of your vehicle’s standard hardware — no new exhaust, no new intercooler, no intake upgrade. Most modern turbocharged cars and vans respond well to a Stage 1 map, with gains typically in the region of 20-40% more torque and a similar uplift in power, depending on the engine.

Stage 2 remap

A Stage 2 remap is designed to take advantage of supporting hardware upgrades — typically a high-flow downpipe, an upgraded intercooler and an improved intake. With those supporting changes, the ECU map can push harder and deliver more power and torque, but it does require an honest conversation about emissions compliance, warranty and insurance.

Which is right for you?

If you want a noticeable, reliable improvement with no hardware changes, Stage 1 is the right answer. If you’ve already upgraded hardware, Stage 2 will unlock more of the engine’s potential. Boostcore specialises in Stage 1 remaps for cars, vans and commercial vehicles across Southampton and Hampshire.
